reMarkable Paper Pure vs Paper Pro: Do You Need Color?

By Branden Bodendorfer  |  Published July 2, 2026

Quick Answer

For most people the reMarkable Paper Pure is the better value. It offers the same writing feel, the same Marker, and the same software as the Paper Pro for about $220 less. Choose the Paper Pro only if you need its color display, front light, larger screen, or keyboard support.

The reMarkable Paper Pure vs Paper Pro question really comes down to one thing: do you need color and a bigger screen, or is the smaller, distraction-free Paper Pure the smarter buy for how you actually work? Both are excellent e-ink tablets for handwritten notes, PDF markup, and focused meetings with no apps and no notifications.

I put both on my desk and used them for real work, not just a spec sheet. The Paper Pro adds a color display, a front light for working in the dark, a larger 11.8-inch screen, and keyboard support. The Paper Pure is a 10.3-inch black-and-white device that is lighter, easier to hold one-handed, and about $220 cheaper at $399 against the Pro's $629. One honest correction to make: on paper the Paper Pro is the faster of the two, with a quicker processor and lower writing latency. The Paper Pure's edge is size, weight, price, and a monochrome screen that refreshes cleanly.

After watching you will know which device fits your work and your budget, especially for a team where that $220 gap multiplies fast. For most professionals who want distraction-free notes and planning, the Paper Pure is plenty. For the full picture, see the complete reMarkable Paper Pure guide. Let's be honest, $200 is not a huge separation, but some of the specs are, but $200 across the distribution of 10 of these devices to your team adds up to a big expense to your bottom line. So, does the Pro features really matter when it comes to your team and yourself being able to execute the purpose of this device? Now, the purpose of the reMarkable in general is for you to be able to capture your notes. Take your notes with you wherever you go. Being able to search for your handwritten notes, being able to come across PDFs, annotations, your plans for the day, and be able to see those in a visual matter without all the distractions. No apps, no notifications, no bells and whistles. It's a space where you are really able to capture what it is you're trying to achieve. It allows you to have attention and focus in that meeting. I hate when I'm in a meeting and everyone else in the room has their laptops out and they're typing at their keyboards and not paying attention to what the goal and objectives are in the room. With the reMarkable, everyone is on the same page. We're all taking notes in a distraction-free environment. And there's so many tools that allow us to take this device with us wherever we go. Heck, the notes themselves sync across an app that you can see in your desktop or other tablets. It allows you to share. It allows you to screen share for that matter. It even allows you to have a means of collaboration. But which device is best for you? Now, I'll be honest. I'm always a big fan of tech. I'm always a big fan that bigger is better and I love all the features and benefits of the Pro. Being able to go ahead and have that backlit display is awesome, especially when I turn off all the lights. You can see that the Pro has that front screen. Now, I ask you before you land on this, how often have you worked in the dark? Not necessarily in a meeting or a boardroom. Maybe at home in the comfort of your own space, but for your work inside the office, you don't need a front-lit display. Our rooms are overly lit and you're able to see the contrast of your writing just fine. But maybe it's the bigger screen itself. What I love about the form factor of the smaller device is the bezel itself. It allows me to hold it in a freestanding location and make annotations on the screen itself. If I try or attempt to do that on the Pro, there's so much more weight and there's not that bezel to hold on to unless I'm in a landscape format. But if I'm someone that needs a keyboard, yes, this device here doesn't have that capability anymore. But with the Pro, you are definitely able to introduce the ability for you to have a keyboard where you can type out your notes. You have to ask yourself, the Pro has a little bit more of a tablet computer like nature, especially with the color. You're able to go ahead and create annotations, highlights, and even being able to see color across your clips, your planner pages, and your different PDFs that you're seeing. But the contrast, the higher contrast of this device allows you to see the same shades. See the differences in your handwritten versus highlight notes. So is it necessary? When I look at these devices, I ask myself, what is the sole intentions? Am I using to take notes or I'm looking for it to be a replacement for my tablet or computer? And more times than not, I want the distraction-free atmosphere. I want to have the display that's with me that can fit in my bag and be something I can easily take out wherever I am. The Pro does have a lot more features, but with the added price tag, is it necessary for me and my entire team? I don't really think the answer is yes. Unless I am stuck on the fact that I want to be able to type out notes and be able to use that color display. Now, just because I have the Pure doesn't mean I can't type because the companion app that you can download on your computer or your tablet allows you to type in. And the beautiful part about both of these devices is they synchronize across the platform. So those type notes in the Pro or those type notes that you make on your computer will move to this device here even without that keyboard present. So you as a user ask yourself what's best for me, what's best for my team. Do I need the color, the front-lit display, or is the smaller, faster, more compact capabilities of the Pure better designed for my goals and aspirations? In an honest perspective, if you don't need the bigger screen and you don't need the color, these are nearly the same identical devices. same pen, same writing surface, same software, same ability to connect with other devices and apps and synchronize your notes across all platforms. So, for someone that's looking to compare these two, ask yourself, do you need the color and the larger screen to increase your productivity and take better notes? And if not, save nearly $200 and go with the Paper Pure. throughout this video. If you learned just one thing, do me a favor, hit the like button. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the reMarkable Paper Pure or Paper Pro better for work?

For most professionals the reMarkable Paper Pure is the better value. It delivers the same distraction-free writing, the same Marker, and the same software as the Paper Pro for about $220 less. 5. Import the Key2Success Planner as a hyperlinked PDF to turn either device into a full planning system, not just a notebook.
